The Fuzz: Frederick Wiseman's Law and Order and the Shadow of Police Radio
Jason Hill, Associate Professor of Art History, University of Delaware,
  • Public Event

Abstract: The talk will invite a close listening to visual culture to reconsider Frederick Wiseman's spring 1969 television news broadcast Law and Order as a document of the determinant force of police radio systems in shaping both the violent conduct and the documentary and journalistic visual record of police work. We will consider Wiseman's film as a record of his immersion into a Kansas City atmosphere lately and long saturated by the noxious and punitive sibling multisensory police media of radio and tear gas.

Bio: Jason Hill is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Delaware. He is the author of Artist as Reporter: Weegee, Ad Reinhardt, and the PM News Picture (2018) and the co-editor (with Vanessa R. Schwartz) of Getting the Picture: The Visual Culture of the News (2015). He recently co-edited (with Zeynep Gürsel) a special "Policing" double issue of the journal History of Photography. This spring he is an "Art and Technology" scholar in residence at the Getty Research Institute.
