The Humanities and Social Sciences at Caltech

Welcome to the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), one of six academic units at the California Institute of Technology.
Within HSS, the Humanities Faculty comprises elements of history, literature, philosophy, history of science, and various languages. The Social Science Faculty draws together an interdisciplinary group of scholars working across the fields of anthropology, economics, finance, law, political science, psychology, and neuroscience.

The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume 11 and The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume 12 Compiled by A. J. Kox, Tilman Sauer, Diana Kormos Buchwald, Rudy Hirschmann, Osik Moses, Benjamin Aronin and Jennifer Stolper are available in both Print and Digital Editions. The digital edition is accompanied by a library edition of the book (pub date: July 22, 2009) and its publication marks the first time a book in the series has been made available in its entirety online. We would like to congratulate Jonathan Katz on his selection as an inaugural "Fellow of the Society for Political Methodology." The society honors individuals "who have made outstanding scholarly contributions to the development of political methodology, and whose methodological work has had a major international impact on subsequent scholarship in the field, in the discipline more broadly, and where appropriate in other areas". It is with pleasure that we announce the appointment of Peter C. Ordeshook as the Mary Stillman Harkness Professor of Political Science. Peter has not only made important contributions in developing formal political theory and the comparative study of constitutional design, but has made important contributions to development of the social science program at Caltech. His appointment to the Harkness chair at this time could not be more appropriate nor more deserved. [Posted April 30, 2009]

Congratulations to R. Michael Alvarez, Professor of Political Science, on being awarded a 2009 Haynes Foundation Faculty Fellowship for his proposal "The Future of Convenience Voting in California". [Posted March 13, 2009]

Congratulations to James F. Woodward, The J.O. and Juliette Koepfli Professor of the Humanities, on being elected as president-elect of the Philosophy of Science Association. The Philosophy of Science Association promotes research, teaching, and free discussion of issues in the philosophy of science from diverse standpoints. [Posted February 18, 2009]

R. Preston McAfee, J. Stanley Johnson Professor of Business, Economics and Management, has been named the newest SPARC innovator for his pioneering contributions to the Open Educational Resources movement and passionate advocacy for Open Access. In 2006, McAfee was the first to publish a complete textbook, Introduction to Economic Analysis, and make it openly available online as well as in CaltechBOOK, one of the constituent repositories in Caltech CODA (Collection of Open Digital Archives).
