Caltech Alumni Roundtable on Writing and Communication in STEM Professions

Scientists and engineers are often told that writing and communication will be important to their professional success, but this raises a number of important questions that are not always answered. Just how important are writing and communication in different STEM careers? In what specific ways will writing and communication be important? Finally, what should future STEM professional do during their educatios to prepare themselves for professional success? This roundtable invites three Caltech alumni back to campus to talk about the roles writing and communication have played in their professional lives. Our guest will be:

Matt Gregori, Principal Scientist at FEED Resource Recovery Inc., (BS '99 CHEM).As a Chemistry major at Caltech, Matt was involved in Page House Leadership and became an active member of the Caltech Y before graduating. In 2010, he pursued an MBA at UCLA's Anderson School of Management with a focus in Sustainabe Energy Operations, and spent a year on site at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Business and Management School. He has worked in business operations for companies ranging from Biodiesel of Las Vegas to OpenTable, and spent the last 3 years working for FEED Resource Recovery as Director of Facility Operations and Principal Scientist. In April, Matt moved to Southern California Gas Company as a Clean Energy Technology Scout.

Colleen Moody, Principal Scientist at Grifols (BS '06 Biol). While at Caltech, Colleen was a Ruddock house resident and Volleyball player. After graduation, she attended UC Irvine to pursue her PhD in Biologial Sciences. Since 2011 Colleen has worked as a Research Associate at Cedars-Sinai, and since 2015 has served as Prncipal Scientist at Grifols. She has used writing skills extensively in her career, for projects ranging from grant proposals to FDA reporting.  

Jason Schadewald, Entrepeneur (BS '06 Math). Jason worked as a software engineer and sales engineer for Parasoft for four years before transitioning to become Product Manager of Language Products. He is now co-founder of Upstanding Technologies LLC, where he has taken on responsibility for business operations, marketing, and product managment. The start-up is committed to creating and promoting technologies that achieve a social benefit for marginalized groups.
