How do we grade, and why? Rethinking grading for the pandemic and beyond

The crisis of the pandemic and calls for greater equity and inclusion in the classroom have had many of us re-examining our standard approaches to grading, in seminar- as well as lecture-based classroom settings. Come learn about current debates and innovations in college assessment, from the increasingly popular method of "labor-based" or "contract" grading to the movement toward "ungrading," in a casual lunchtime conversation. Susanne Hall, Jen Jahner, and Anne Sullivan will lead the discussion, surveying the grading approaches they have used over the last year of pandemic teaching while also touching on current research and debates. The hour will offer open discussion of how we grade and what we hope our students take away from our forms of assessment and feedback.
