Rich Rocks, the Climate Crisis, and the Tech Imperium
Sophia Kalantzakos, Visiting Fellow in the Research Institute for the History of Science and Technology (2020-2021), Caltech; Global Distinguished Professor in Environmental Studies and Public Policy, New York University,
  • Public Event

The decarbonization of the global economy in response to the climate crisis and to the fourth industrial revolution which features artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G networks has triggered a race to secure uninterrupted access to critical minerals indispensable for high-technology applications. Geopolitical realignments and the growing US-China rivalry are quickly turning into a battle over leadership of the tech-imperium. Industries that require critical minerals as inputs are now caught in the middle of increasingly fraught geopolitics.

Professor Kalantzakos will provide insight into this latest manifestation of resource competition and the challenges facing major industrial nations as they move to meet their mid-century goals for carbon neutrality as well as to become front-runners in the fourth industrial revolution.
