Empirical research on research and the reproducibility crisis
John P.A. Ioannidis, C.F. Rehnborg Professor in Disease Prevention, Professor of Health Research and Policy, Stanford University,

Abstract

The rapid growth of science has resulted in over 150 million published scholarly documents and zillions of pieces of data that can allow for a rigorous empirical evaluation of some fundamental questions surrounding research practices. At the same time, many scientific disciplines are recognizing major challenges in the reproducibility of their work, which has given rise to the sense of a reproducibility crisis. Research on research can help us understand these issues and hopefully improve the efficiency and credibility of scientific investigations.
