Set in 1962, shortly after the erection of the Berlin Wall, The Tunnel (2001) is based on the true story of a group of West Berliners who dug a tunnel through the wall to East Berlin, traveled through it to pick up as many loved ones as possible, and then returned through the tunnel to West Berlin.
