This course explores the relationship between art and science in early modern Europe. We will pay particular attention to the role of perception in the making, reception, and theory of art. Topics include (but are not limited to): the senses – smell, touch, sight, hearing, and taste – proprioception, cognition, ideas, memory, color theory and optics, mesmerism, psychology, machines, technology, and theories of aesthetics, gender, race, criminality, and the animal world.
