Beginning with earliest Filipino and Japanese arrivals in Mexico at the dawn of globalization and concluding with the “parachute” children and “astronaut” parents crossing the Pacific now, the course will examine Asian American lives, communities, and movements from the 16th Century to the present. Using a combination of secondary literature and primary sources, we will explore key moments in Asian American history, such as: the establishment of ethnic enclaves, anti-Asian movements, World War II, the Asian American movement, and the growth of the model-minority myth.
