Support HSS Young Scholars

Graduate Fellowships

Endowed fellowships help HSS welcome the absolute best applicants for graduate study—young men and women who will influence science, technology, and society as future leaders. And the availability of fellowship support strongly influences graduate-school selection for top scholars. In fact, it is often the deciding factor for applicants to graduate programs.

Looking to the future, traditional sources of government funding for scientific research are becoming less certain, and Caltech faces increased competition from peer institutions. Such conditions are shrinking the pool of applicants and at the same time raising the minimum support level necessary to recruit them to campus. To attract top scholars, we need to be able to offer fellowships as generously as our peers do. No serious young scholar can ignore the freedom, distinction, and financial support that come with a named fellowship offer.

Funding for graduate fellowships in HSS is an investment in the future—the future of science and technology, the future of education, and the future of our understanding of the world around us. It is an investment in the exceptional people who will usher in the next generation of knowledge.

Undergraduate Research Funding

Undergraduate research is one of the main reasons students choose Caltech, which offers students extraordinary opportunities to pursue creative inquiry and transformative discoveries under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the forefront of their fields. In addition to one-on-one research opportunities with HSS faculty, Caltech offers the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program, which has been one of the "crown jewels" of Caltech since 1979, and the WAVE Fellows program, which aims to foster diversity by increasing the participation of students historically marginalized in science and engineering PhD programs.
