Congratulations to the 2017 HSS Graduates!

The Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences congratulates our new PhD and Bachelor of Science recipients in the class of 2017:

Graduate Students

Tatiana Mayskaya - During her final year in HSS's Social Sciences PhD program, Mayskaya was named a 2016–2017 Linde Institute Graduate Fellow and successfully defended her thesis, Essays on Information Collection, with Federico Echenique as her advisor. She looks forward to becoming an assistant professor in economics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow this fall.

Welmar Rosado-Buenfil - After completing his dissertation, Essays on the Political Economy of Subnational Public Finances, with Rod Kiewiet as his advisor, Rosado-Buenfil is considering his options, including a job offer from the Bank of Mexico. He received an HSS Chair's Council Fellowship for the 2016–2017 academic year. His research interests include political economy, public finance, and applied econometrics.

Myungkoo Song - Song received his PhD after successfully defending his thesis, Essays on the Impact of Information Asymmetry, with Jaksa Cvitanic as his advisor. Last year, he received an HSS Chair's Council Fellowship to support his research. Song has accepted a position as an associate research fellow at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade.

Jun Zhang - Zhang graduated after completing his dissertation, Essays on Matching Theory, with Federico Echenique as his advisor. He was named one of The Linde Institute fellows for the 2016–2017 academic year. Starting this fall, he will be an assistant professor at the Nanjing Audit University in China.

Undergraduate Students

Among the seniors that graduated, 16 percent (42 out of 260) completed an option or minor in the humanities or social sciences. Five students chose to pursue their first and only option in HSS: four in Business, Economics, and Management (BEM) and one in English. Twenty-two students selected one of our tracks for their second option (double major): 15 in BEM, three in Economics, three in English, and one in History and Philosophy of Science. And 14 students completed a humanities minor: 10 in English, two in History, and two in Philosophy.

These students are planning to embark on a diverse and impressive range of next steps, such as:

• Pursuing advanced degrees, including a PhD in operations research and financial engineering at Princeton University, a medical degree from UC San Diego, and an MD/PhD from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.
• Joining technology companies, from startups to multinational corporations, including Luminar Technologies (which develops Lidar systems for self-driving cars), AirPR (which provides analytics, insights, and measurement solutions for the PR industry), and Oracle.
• Going into finance and consulting, including placements at Mars & Co., Two Sigma, Dimensional Fund Advisors, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
