Integrative Moral Cognition
Joshua Greene, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Harvard University,
I ll discuss several lines of research illustrating a common theme: Moral judgments are produced, not by a dedicated moral faculty, but through the cooperative and competitive operations of diverse cognitive systems. Many of these systems are domain-general and not specifically dedicated to moral judgment. These include systems that enable rule-based reasoning, cognitive control, visual imagery, the affective integration of decision variables, reward processing, and the construction of complex thoughts.
