Title: Reflections on 50 years in Science

Abstract: In this highly autobiographical account, I will describe the people and institutions who have most influenced me as well as my unconventional approach to experimental science—I avoid hypothesis-driven research and instead pursue ignorance-driven research and tool building. In addition, I will share my opinion on the radical and detrimental changes that I have witnessed in the way postdoctoral training and scientific publishing are conducted and propose ways of addressing them. I will also describe how being neurodivergent has been a positive factor in my career and in the one big hypothesis-driven experiment I did help conduct—the establishment of the Janelia Research Campus.
