Postdoctoral Scholar in Artificial Intelligence and Public Policy

Caltech's Center for Science, Society, and Public Policy (CSSPP) and the Department for Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) are jointly sponsoring a postdoctoral scholar position in artificial intelligence and public policy. We are seeking computer science applicants with an interest in applications that have real-world policy uses or implications, or social science applicants with an interest in applying computational techniques to policy problems. The joint focus on policy and computation is essential, and experience with both is preferred. Topics include, but are not limited to, the social implications of AI (algorithmic fairness, transparency, etc.), computational social science, computational problems in environmental and climate policy, and the impacts of geoengineering.

The scholar will have a mentor in both the social sciences and in computer science, and we expect that they will actively participate in research activities that bridge Caltech's Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and Engineering & Applied Sciences (EAS) divisions.

The initial appointment is for one year and may be extended to a second year subject to a successful review. There are no teaching obligations, but teaching opportunities may be available.

The position is contingent upon completion of an accredited PhD program. Review of applications will begin immediately. Complete applications should be received before January 15 to receive full consideration. Applicants should submit a CV and a research statement. The research statement (or a separate document) should contain a section that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A cover letter (maximum 1 page) is optional. Please email the complete application to [email protected].
