Hum/En 5       Major British Authors
Winter Term 2006      Section 3

Required books

The following books should be available by the first week of class in the Caltech bookstore.

        Plato, Symposium (Penguin edition)
Castiglione, The Book of the Courtier (Penguin)
English Sixteenth-Century Verse: An Anthology, ed. R. S. Sylvester (Norton)
        Austen, Northanger Abbey (Penguin)
Conan Doyle, The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Modern Library)
        Frayn, Copenhagen (Anchor)
Wittgenstein, The Blue and Brown Books (Harper)

I'd encourage you strongly to buy these at the Caltech bookstore.
However, if you get your books elsewhere, you need to be sure to get the same editions so that you'll have the same page numbers as everyone else during discussions in class, and so that the page citations in your writing assignments can be checked.  There are several other versions of the Plato, Castiglione, and Austen in print, and there is more than one collection of Sherlock Holmes stories.  These are among the reasons why it may be easiest to go to the bookstore.
