SOUL KITCHEN (2009)

Baxter Lecture Hall
May 31 2013 07:30 PM

In German (and Greek) with English subtitles

Dir. Fatih Akin – Moritz Bleibtreu, Birol Ünel, Monika Bleibtreu

Fatih Akin's Soul Kitchen is a jubilant celebration of urban life and its discontents. Akin and star/co-writer Adam Bousdoukos meant the film as sort of a modern, urban regional film. (Heimatfilm) It celebrates the modern multi-ethnic community as a condition without national definitions.. This upbeat comedy is new ground for German/Turkish Akin, who made a splash with the romantic drama Head-On,* then seemed to take his critical success overly to heart and lost some of his unrestrained vitality in the  more standard art film The Edge of Heaven.* (shown here last year) It's nice to see that Akin can make a film so flat-out entertaining without losing his passion and integrity.– GREAT soundtrack – nutty fun.  Very successful in Germany. Multiple festival winner.   [Rated MA]
