H 113 Hispanic Frontiers in North America 9 units (3-0-6) second term. This course explores the legacy of Spain in what later became the United States, focusing on what is today the American Southwest (from California to Texas) and American South (from Louisiana to Florida). We will start with the Spanish exploration and settlement of North America, move through 300 years of cultural exchange and conflict on the northern frontiers of New Spain, and end with early Mexican rule (1821-1848). We will focus on Spanish expansion, native communities, the rise of new European-American cultures, and the transformation of imperial frontiers into national borderlands after 1821.
