Hum 144: Topics in the History of American Immigration: From Forced Migrations to High-Tech Labor: Migrants, Immigration, and Incorporation in the United States

Spring Term, 2004-05

This course examines the history and politics of migration movements to the United States and changes in immigration policy, politics, and incorporation trends. We start with a discussion of the various forms of global migration, including slavery, and then move through 19th-21st century migration movements to the US, including the movement of highly skilled migrants (students, high-tech workers, engineers, etc). Topics covered include changing immigration policies/politics, controversies over the membership and incorporation of immigrants, and the life experiences of immigrants. While this course focuses on the US, comparative references will also be made to Europe, Asia, and other regions of the world. Instructor: Feldblum, T 7-10pm
