Graduate Studies

The study of the social sciences, which include economics, political science, and political economy, among others, has been an important part of the Caltech curriculum for more than a century. Faculty committed to research in the social sciences have been active at Caltech for more than 50 years. HSS, with its excellent but small core of pioneering and leading scholars in their fields, has an outstanding record of training PhD students. Many graduates have gone on to distinguished careers in academics, industry, and government.

HSS offers graduate students the opportunity to pursue coursework and research in two different programs leading to a doctoral degree.

  • The PhD program in the Social Sciences is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the theoretical perspectives, quantitative techniques, and experimental methods of economics, political science, and related fields.

HSS does not have, and therefore does not accept applications for, a terminal master's degree. Students enrolled in the programs, however, may be awarded a master's degree if they complete the necessary requirements.
